Energy Camp is created and hosted by ReThink Energy Florida, and is led by a team of interns and volunteers with a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) as the curriculum.
It is for grades 3-6 and focuses on issues such as impacts from fossil fuel usage and options with renewable energy. Children learn to make a solar oven, fix their bikes, create solar bugs, and more.
The cost is $160 per session, and partial and full scholarships are available.
The camp recognizes and teaches about energy issues beyond electrical consumption; for instance, the camp addresses the ties between energy and food, energy and water, and energy and transportation.
The campers also go on multiple field trips such as traveling to local farms to talk about the importance and sustainability of growing their own food. Children are given hands-on experience in urban planning as we look at various forms of alternative transportation, and the planning required for cities to support them.
