Solar United Neighbors of Florida today announced the launch of Leon County Solar Co-op, which will provide homeowners with an opportunity to save money on the purchase of solar panels and build a community of local solar supporters.

The announcement was made at a press conference held appropriately under the solar panels at the Leon County Extension Center.

Sustainable Tallahassee is one of the five local partners endorsing the establishment of the Solar Co-op.  The others are:  League of Women Voters of Tallahassee, Florida Conservation Voters Education Fund, Sierra Club Big Bend Group, and ReThink Energy Florida.

Along with Heaven Campbell of Solar United Neighbors of Florida, other speakers at the press conference were:

Aliki Moncrief, Executive Director, Florida Conservation Voters Education Fund
Linda Davis, President, League of Women Voters of Tallahassee
Grant Gelhardt, Chair, Sierra Club Big Bend Group
         Katherine Preston, President, Sustainable Tallahassee
         Kristin Dozier, Leon County Commissioner

In her remarks, Kristin Dozier read a supporting Proclamation signed by all the Leon County Commissioners.  She concluded by saying, “I really am proud of Leon County’s work with all of our partners . . . to represent not just how big of a challenge this is, but to look for strategic initiatives and real action plans to make our community as sustainable as possible and resilient as possible.”

After today's Press Conference Kick-Off there will be three information sessions for residents.  They'll be held on January 16, February 22, and March 27 - check those dates on the Sustainable Tallahassee calendar for locations and times.

At the Leon County Commission meeting on December 12, Commissioners unanimously approved a recommendation to evaluate developing a community-wide Climate Action Plan in collaboration with Sustainable Tallahassee.  Here is an excerpt from the proposal made to Commissioners:

“. . . recommending collaborating with Sustainable Tallahassee in pursuing a preliminary evaluation of how a community-wide sustainability action could plan be developed.  After having sought the organization’s initial support for the concept the next proposed step is for Leon County staff together with Sustainable Tallahassee to approach the community’s largest organizations (e.g. Florida State, City of Tallahassee, etc.) in order to solicit their level of interest in joining a collaborative approach to creating a community-wide climate action plan.”

Thank you to the Leon County Office of Sustainability staff, and thank you to our County Commissioners for your confidence in Sustainable Tallahassee! We are excited to be part of this opportunity to move forward!
