EcoTeam Celebration - June 4, 2013
Members of EcoTeams and other interested individuals gathered on June 4th at the Leon County Extension Office for dinner, gift presentations, and a Sustainability Project Challenge.
Thanks to Tom Taylor, Sustainable Tallahassee board member and chair of the EcoTeams committee, and Daniel Parker, EcoTeams coordinator, for organizing and facilitating this event which was hosted in conjunction with the ongoing “EcoTeams” project sponsored by Sustainable Tallahassee and co-funded by Leon County and the City of Tallahassee.
Will Sheftall led a tour of the Leon County Extension facility’s solar and geothermal systems and the sophisticated control system and display that’s used for demonstration and education.
Breakout session groups brainstormed ideas for the Sustainability Project Challenge, and each team made a presentation to the group. The winner was Sue Hansen's "Bag Brigade" which earned her $100 for implementation: making shopping bags from left over and “found” fabric to give to shoppers who still use plastic or paper bags, particularly those who can't afford to purchase reusable bags.
Sue immediately organized several volunteer teams to sew bags from her pattern and hand them out at grocery and retail stores. Her initiative, later partnering with Peggy Sanford, has become our Rags2Bags program.
There was great interest overall in continuing the momentum of EcoTeams. To see the report of this event and a description of all the innovative Sustainability Project Challenge proposals click HERE. They are all great ideas just waiting for someone to take them on - we hope one will be the inspiration you're looking for!
