community garden workshop - february 22, 2020

Sustainable Tallahassee’s Community Garden Network held an open-to-the public “Community Gardening 101” workshop on February 22, 2020.

The workshop location was “The Dwellings”, the tiny house development on Highway 20, which has a Gathering Room for meetings and presentations, as well as an impressive greenhouse and extensive community garden - a perfect setting for the discussion and demonstrations.

Presentations by Lizette Kelly, Community Garden Network leader, Molly Jameson, Leon County Extension Agent, and Janis Piotrowski, Master Gardener, included - -

  • The basics of how to start a community garden,
  • Where to get funding,
  • Options for governance,
  • How to get and retain garden members, and
  • The importance of communication.

Following the presentations, everyone who attended had the opportunity to tour the large greenhouse and organic garden managed by Samantha Tyler. The bountiful vegetable harvest is turned into creative and delicious meals enjoyed by the residents at The Dwellings.
